Mark, re >I compile prices each week and calculate the changes from my previous documentation. The data is on eight interlinked spreadsheets.<

I can imagine this takes considerable effort and time.
Thank you very much for sharing your work!

Mark - My thoughts are along the same lines. Now that the Christmas season is almost over prices of hard drives should start to decline. I have a feeling that how steep the decline is depends upon the level of over (or under) supply that exists in inventories. I think prices will start to move in the next week or so and should continue to do so through January.

Your work is appreciated and I am glad to see you back on SI.

Mark, Are you getting any feel for the prevalance of one head drive? (For that matter does anyone know how they are selling or if the lowest end PCs are using them). What's interesting is that if these become common, a digital VCR with its three platter drive will be six times as valuable to the head and suspension companies. I'm waiting for the day when digital VCRs are widely recognized as the hottest consumer product and people look around for the beneficiaries of this trend.

Does anyone have a very good idea of the incremental costs of going from a single platter, 2 head drive to a 2 platter four head drive? Intuitively, I believe it should be pretty insignificant compared to the total cost of the product they are in but would feel more comfortable with numbers. -Z
