<<Most of the protestors were members of a coalition calling themselves the "Direct Action Network". It's members include such deeply intellectual groups as "Earth First". The "Sierra Club" along with a bunch of Fascist Neo- communist organization in Europe. To call these groups "intellectual" is nonsensical at best.>> Michael, for someone who doesn't want his posts distorted, I must say that you do the same thing quite a bit. Environmental, labor and human rights groups from all over the planet were at the WTO talks in Seattle. People from these groups do tend to be well-educated intellectuals, because these are the people who tend to have leisure time, money, and knowledge of trends like the destruction of the planet which cause them great concern. During the Nixon administration, most of the people who were protesting him and the Vietnam war were college students and professors, and more liberal Americans, who also tended to be more highly educated than the general population. The working classes during that time were more supportive of Nixon and the war, and indeed sent more of their members into battle. I suppose you must think that no one who is TRULY intellectual would have any of the beliefs any of these people have, but in truth intellectuals do seem to be more liberal, and more interested in human rights and the environment. I do think it is unfair to label them as Fascist Neo-Communists. I wonder where you are reading that, or getting that information. It sounds like a smear campaign to me, just a blatant effort on your part to discredit them and the things they were trying to accomplish in Seattle. I don't think I made any attempt to distort any of your posts, incidentally. You were raving about how great the police in Seattle were, and I wondered if you were aware that there had been allegations of police brutality, and asked you several times what your opinion of that was. There is no distortion at all in what I did; I was simply soliciting your opinion. I would note, however, that shooting rubber bullets at protesters, and tear gassing even tourists who got in the way, did not go off well in the opinion of most commentators who are writing about the situation there. It sort of reminded me of scenes in Northern Ireland and Palestine, and I thought it was very scary that things got so far out of control.
