Good analysis, Jeff. I think you're on the right track but what about those witnesses that reported hearing "a man and woman arguing" and then a woman scream about the time of the murder? If that's true, I tend to think that Suzanne did, in fact, know her assailant. It's likely that the argument resulted in the driver pulling over, Suzanne (and the murderer) getting out while they continued to argue, then the attack beginning quickly after she turned to walk away.

Also, those having robbery as a motive rarely stab their victims 17 times. That's more indicative of a crime of passion.
