I'm too tired and worn out at this point to get into it, but they wont want their own wire, per se, but they will want their own channel-derived service interface, be it logical or physical. But I do like your idea of the cable frequency auctions, Jay. Don't say it too loud, or else you may find it appearing on Ebay.

Incidentally, all of the kludge issues you just mentioned surrounding the head end and redundant provisions? These are precisely among the same things that I've been saying here for the past year.

What are they gonna do, have frequency auctions?
Sure. Why not?

Of course the MSO's would lease out the frequency to the person most capable of giving them overall return, more complex than just selling the bandwidth, but the same concept.

Isn't this just POTS carrier legacy thinking?
Its just basic capitalism. You have something valuable- you sell it.

think of the compatibility problems in the head end systems. Multiple head-end systems colo'd?

Can you detail a little more what the issues are here? Are the cable head ends tight on floorspace? Is the connection point between ATHM and the MSO's complex? (I figured it would be somthing pretty standardized)

they can't make any money by doing that - that they couldn't make simply by riding ATHM at the IP level.

Depends on how much ATHM charges doesnt it?

Why should ATHM spend billions to develop a system and then sell its services to undercut its own customer base? ATHM has said to AOL "we don't need you- we'll just steal your customers". Why should it be any different with Mindspring?

It rarely works to resell services from your primary competitor. To do it you have to have substantial added value and I can't see Mindspring coming up with any. AOL maybe could.
