DJ:" control = assurance " You know how fascinating language can be, and in particular, the interesting and subtly different ways that English is used not only by the English but also by our European friends and business associates. In Norway, where I work in factories the good folks there advised me early on to be careful about how I used the word, "control"; ie., it has a different meaning over there than over here. I think I said something like, "...let's re-calibrate your mass spectrometer instruments to assay these alloy elements down to at least 3 or 4 decimal places of precision - by doing so we can improve quality control ". To which they said: "You mean, quality assurance, ja..." And so I began using - and thinking about - the differences between the word, "control" and, "assurance". Speer was my favourite Nazi. He once wrote, after the war, about the rational basis for eugenics as a just end unjustifiable by any means. Until now, perhaps - as "genetic engineering" is an untried means to an end longed for many times before. I believe that, within 20 years - oh, we will live to see it - what is now "birth control" will become "birth assurance", and all that that implies :-/ I'm such a romantic {sigh} I'll probably miss mutation. -Steve
