Verio Selects Inktomi To Build Advanced Content Distribution Service; Verio to Integrate Inktomi Traffic Server To Improve Content Delivery and Performance FOSTER CITY, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 6, 1999--Inktomi Corp. (NASDAQ: INKT), developer of scalable Internet infrastructure software, today announced that Verio, Inc., (NASDAQ: VRIO) the world's largest operator of business and ecommerce Web sites and a leading provider of comprehensive Internet services, will integrate the Inktomi Traffic Server(tm) network cache platform into its premium content distribution service to provide superior performance to customers with high-traffic Web sites. Inktomi Traffic Server will provide Verio with the infrastructure for accelerating Web download response times, lowering bandwidth costs by storing the customers' Web content closer to the user, and enabling a broad range of strategic new value-added services that Verio can offer its customers. "As the leading provider of more than 300,000 web sites, we are committed to developing new services to help our customers maximize the success of their Web sites," said Laura Zung, vice president of product management for Verio. "Inktomi Traffic Server combined with Verio's scalable Web-hosting services, will offer our small and medium-sized business customers the high performance content distribution that has been traditionally available only to costly, high-end Web sites."
Traffic Server provides Verio with an advanced content delivery infrastructure to improve the efficiency and manageability of its network, provide premium quality of service and Web site performance to customers, and prepare their network for traffic spikes caused by Net events. This "surge protection" capability insulates commerce and content sites from flash crowding and overloads during peak shopping hours, without requiring sites to build for peak capacity.
"Inktomi pioneered the network caching market in 1997, and has built a highly flexible caching and content distribution platform that powers many of the world's largest networks," said Peter Christy, vice president of Internet Research Group. "IRG's recent cache industry report highlights Inktomi's leadership role in the caching industry, with 45% market share at the system level(1). Inktomi has aggressively pursued the application and evolution of caching technology. Their recent entry into the enterprise and cache appliance markets opens additional opportunities."
"Inktomi Traffic Server enables leading hosting and content delivery service providers like Verio to offer a broad range of advanced network services, as well as accelerating the performance and efficiencies of their networks," said Paul Gauthier, chief technology officer of Inktomi. "The combination of Verio's network and facilities with Inktomi's infrastructure software delivers a compelling end-to-end solution for leading content and commerce sites."
