John:
In retrospect here is what may have happened to Dell.
In Jan+Feb market cap exceeded $100bil and
Dell became #1 in several sales areas. With the split
providing surplus shares, the stock became a commodity
in the minds of the mm's. More a stock to be traded than held
Also the computer became considered a commodity
and with the publishing of MSD's book the secrets
of success were available to any other company
to duplicate Dell's work and compete effectively.
(this not working too well-haha)
So its easy to picture the MM's drawing their charts,
comparing Dell with T,IBM,HWP
P/E 5 yr growth this qtr next qtr next5 yr
Dell 70 70 40 39 33
T 24 -.7 -5 6 13
IBM 33 39 12 16 12
HWP 37 15 13 16 15
Sorry about the crummy chart, but can you not hear the
little gears going around as they compare the
P/E's, cut Dell's potential growth rate to 1/2
of what it once was?
They have used the same type of comparative calculations for years
and have been utterly wrong.
Dell - the incomparable. Underated and (temporarily)
overlooked.
