Portland Man Sentenced For Making Threatening Phone Calls to Former Girlfriend,
Reports U.S. Attorney

BOSTON, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- A Portland, Maine man was sentenced in
federal court on Friday, December 3, 1999, in connection with making
threatening phone calls to his former girlfriend across state lines.
United States Attorney Donald K. Stern announced that MICHAEL C. HAM, age
21, of 20 Sawyer Street, Portland, Maine, was sentenced last week to 1 year
and 3 months' imprisonment by U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock
for making threatening phone calls across state lines. HAM was also sentenced
to three years of supervised release, and ordered to attend a certified
domestic violence intervention program for batterers, and a drug and alcohol
counseling program.
At an earlier court hearing before Judge Woodlock, HAM pled guilty to
making threatening phone calls from Portland, Maine between January 20, 1998
and March 24, 1998, to two individuals who resided in Boston, Massachusetts.
All of the telephone communications threatened bodily injury. Specifically,
HAM made approximately 100 calls from Portland to his former girlfriend, who
was attending Simmons College in Boston, in violation of a restraining order.
Many of these calls contained threats to injure her if she contacted the
police about his harassing phone calls. HAM also made repeated phone calls
from Portland to injure his former girlfriend's new boyfriend.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and was
