Bill: I agree with you completely re. the unlikelihood of SUNW realizing financial gain from Java. Still, Gilder's no dummy, surely he made a plausible case to you, would you mind sharing it?

None of this changes the fact that Java is gaining ground despite lack of standardization. So far it's failed on the client because of incompatibilities, sluggish performance, and download speeds. The last two are changing as processor speeds and high-bandwidth home internet service proliferate. The first issue's the toughie, but it's not a problem on servers, and Java is making deep inroads as a server-side component language.

Redmond would be foolish to ignore or abandon the language. What ever happened to "embrace and extend"?

Bill,

IMO EJB (Enterprise Java beans) will be the first big moneymaker for SUN as far as Java goes. A LOT of corporate business software development is going this way and almost all application server companies are building EJB in. My app server vendor candidly told me that SUN is demanding 2 to 3% of their revenues from sales of their app server.

You have to hand it to SUN. While they are trying to become the next MSFT they keep hammering at MSFT to deflect attention from themselves - all the time creating their own monopoly with Java that has the potential (IMO) to one day dwarf MSFTs current monopoly.
