Speaking of ASP - I have OSII for the group to review. This is a dog that has a good shot of coming back to the living in the not so distant future. Same business as BEAS - middle ware, and software tools. This is an important sector in the Tech world. Without the software tools, you can't design new software and applications.

For all you "value", and "contrarian types" (Like me), OSII is one worth watching and doing some DD on. Patience and risk capital of course:

OSI to Offer Industry-Leading Service and Network Management Solutions to ASP Market
SAN FRANCISCO, ASP Summit, Dec. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Objective Systems Integrators (Nasdaq: OSII) today announced that it will offer Application Service Providers (ASPs) management solutions for their networks, systems, and applications. OSI will leverage its proven Unified Management Architecture(TM) (UMA(TM)) to create a set of standard solutions for ASPs to integrate and manage service delivery, assurance, and usage functions. These solutions will enable ASPs to rapidly deploy new services and applications, increase quality of service, automate fault management, and minimize operational costs.

ASPs are faced with the complex challenge of managing critical networks and application hosting resources that may include diverse data center platforms, multiple network providers, and service level agreements (SLAs) that cross many network layers. To compete effectively, ASPs need to optimize customer turn-up times through automated flow-through provisioning.

OSI's ASP solutions will include the ability to:

-- activate thousands of customers daily
-- interface with billing and customer care systems
-- run historical reports on capacity levels, service activation, and
service assurance events
-- scale to support hundreds of thousands of customers
-- decrease time to market with an easy-to-use interface that requires no
programming
-- increase operational efficiency with a common system for managing all
systems and services

Commenting on analyst forecasts showing that the ASP market will reach the US$20 billion mark by 2002, Jim Olsen, OSI vice president, marketing, said, "The ASP market is exploding, and with our flexible Unified Management Architecture and functional applications, OSI is well positioned to capitalize on this market. The ASP offerings are a natural extension of our new-generation solutions for managing multi-layered networks with carrier-grade stability."

Olsen added, "With our plan to offer ASP management solutions, OSI continues to lead the market for proven world class management of multivendor, multitechnology networks. ASPs will be able to realize the benefits of an integrated solution that can enable them to dedicate their valuable resources to working on business goals instead of solving the IT issues of managing heterogeneous networks."
