When I was 18 I swore that I wouldn't buy an American car. I remeber all those lemon American cars that my parents had in the 70s when I was growing up. But then GM started it's Saturn division in the late 80s, which became highly regarded amongst the gen-Xers like myself. I brought a Saturn a couple of years ago and love it. It's been just as reliable as my Honda was. I think the U.S. car companies finally got a clue and started making quality cars. Saturn has certainly changed my perception of U.S. cars.

>>> Next will be a Ford
product. . . which do you recommend?
<<<< Lincoln LS -- exceptional ride handling (if you jam the brakes on, the nose doesn't dive, the vehicle remains flat)

"Retrobird" on the same platform as Lincoln LS and Jaguar

>>>> "How important is energy efficiency to those under
age 30?"<<<< partial answer is "If it's not important to everyone else, then it's not to me" given the number of SUVs, is it important to everyone else.....actually not, the game these days is safety and security. As Hillary says, "It's for the children"...So boomers say one thing, but buy another.. (Drive my Suburban to the global warming rally)....what's a genXer to think?

Higher level issue is "Does the vehicle fit in with my "culture"? "... And if car sellers can equate cool cars AND efficiency, then they have a new market...one that they will be able to gain a large share of...right now, GenXers are technology driven... thus, hybrids as a technology is cool.... actually I think you will see a "partnering" of GenXers and echo boomers with Car companies as opposed to a adversarial relationship with boomers....

What I see as hypocritical are the SUV haters who previously owned mini-vans to haul their kids around in. Now that the kids are grown they want a smaller vehicle... little do they suggest that their minivan was every bit as big and a fuel inefficient as the SUVs. Were minivan drivers railing against fuel related issues? Couldn't....

So the whole thing become mired in history, bad feelings, media reinforcement and emotion...

So, what I continue to see is a weird situation in which the parents hate american vehicles while the kids want them....but in the long run it will get even weirder since Ford now owns the king of yuppie car groups - Volvo or the (Fjord<G>)... What do I do? ... then what do I do (or say) when I find out that the next Taurus is being built on the Volvo platform to take advantage of the safety offered by its design!! Do I hate the Taurus or love it?
