Also, I differ from most by believing that once convicted,
the punishment should be swift and severe.

I don't know who the "most" you say disagree with that are. I think most people do believe that once people have been given a fair trial, punishment should be swift and severe. There is some question as to whether severe punishment is more effective -- in England, for example, sentences are routinely far less than they are here, and crime is quite a bit lower. But then, their society is different in other ways, so the comparison may not be valid, though I think there are lessons to be learned. But it's a certain thing that incredibly severe penalties for drug crimes haven't done a thing to reduce the drug problem.

The behavior we should not be accepting is the brutality of the police! Did you click on the link directed to Mosko from Khalil Ayoub about 23 notes down? Did you read what the doctor had to say? Have you ever been a victim of police brutality and stupidity? (I have) Have you ever had a cop almost blow your head off for "stealing your own car? (I have) Have you ever witnessed the police beating up someone for no apparent reason? (I have) Have you ever carried a gun in the line of your duties and be instructed on how to use it? (I have) In the words of my old guard sergeant: Shoot to kill!
We have to face the sad fact that there are "bad elements" in most major city police departments who secretly love to use excessive force, and even torture people. Denial will not help things to change, and change they should if we are ever to become more civilized... Yogi
