That's an interesting statement- does communism really matter any more? Is it still alive as an idea? Do people still want to be communist? No doubt communism will have appeal again- especially if we have a depression- since it seems to me that good times breed a certain amount of contempt for social engineering. But even in REALLY bad times is communism still viable? Or would some sort of enlightened socialism be more attractive? I don't know- I'm just wondering. And we have socialism in America- we just aren't intellectually honest enough to call it that. And of course because we don't call it that it is sort of a hodgepodge (imo) and would in fact be better managed if we acknowledged what we were doing, and owned up to the fact that a certain amount of "socialism" is necessary (or is not necessary and ought to be done away with - depending on your point of view).

Anyway, I thought it might make for an interesting discussion.
