I think that EVA is more of a management tool than an investment one, though it can certainly tell you about companies to avoid. Another book on the subject, much more complete is "The Quest for Value" by G. Bennett Stewart III which I paid full retail for, only to find it remaindered at a bookstore the next week for 1/4 the price. I must admit that it still sitting on the bookshelf awaiting some distant future when I can find the time and energy to read it.You might also check out sternstewart.com
A lot of forward thinking companies use this, and it makes a lot of common sense. After all, GAAP are by their nature arbitrary, and designed more to give equal comparisons than to necessarily reflect things from an investors point of view. My approach to investing takes into account (pun intended) that I have a better understanding of technology and markets than accounting...
