Yes, Globalstar1 can be the uplink with downlinks provided by other satellite systems [apparently] but I suppose that will take some Qualcomm reconfiguring of gateways and handsets - maybe new handsets, not just new software. I really don't know but that's the impression I've gained.

But the plain old vanilla Constellation1 won't be doing data other than 9600 bps per handset as far as I know at present.

The real action comes with Constellation2, which will give some serious speed at 384 kbps and presumably even faster on the downlinks with data co-ordination with big Geostationary monsters.

I'll be happy just to see that Constellation1 is full of happily chattering voice customers.

PS: John Stichnoth, it's now too late to skoosh the competition if Craig McCaw has indeed picked Iridium and ICO up for a song. He can slash minute prices to nothing or really, really, low for the first two years, make a bit of money on the handsets, then after Globalstar is in the bankruptcy courts, increase the minute prices to slow demand to manageable proportions.
