sue,

you need 3 nics if you have a cable modem and you want to network two machines using a crossover cable.

2 go in machine A. 1 goes in machine B.

connect the cm to 1 of the nics in machine A. connect the 2nd nic in machine A to the nic in machine B, using the rj45 crossover cable.

3 nics. 1-2-3

:)

Sue & mr.mark, with my 3 score & 15 years guess my Bulb is
glowing Dimmer Than I thought. I'm of the impression the
NICs, Network Interface Cards are used to
set up a LAN, Local Area Network. That is,
setting up a NetWork between your Computers in Home/Office, etc!.

Now that leaves us with a Modem Card, either Cable or from a Phone jack, (RJ11) (56k) or other incoming signal devices. Sorry I have been confusing the two cards.

Lets start over. Signal comes in on a Modem Card, which you already have. Connect computers with NIC cards, ( 1 in each computer), w/RJ45 Crossover cable. Not to confuse the two, let's say we have only 2 NIC cards. One double ended RJ45 Crossover Phone cable connects these two NIC cards. Forgetting the Modem cards.

Sue, you did say you didn't have a PCI slot left in #1, correct?
And I suggested getting a ISA NIC (16bit) 10mb. (assuming you have a vacant ISA Slot). Slow, but it works.
(PCI (32 bit) 100mb, ten times faster transferring files.)

Sorry I was confusing you, bet I really have done so now<G>.

Regards, /jw
