It seems to me that in this country communism grew out of a huge dissatisfaction with what "capitalism" had done (understand that I mean the capitalism of the early 20th century- as it operated before the great depression). I see the enormous interest in communism at that time as part novelty and part desperation. I agree that there is a component of envy - especially against the extremely wealthy- I think that is a natural reaction to excess, especially in times of general deprivation.
