I bought equal amounts of Sun and Compaq 2-3 years ago. My Sun is up 863% while my Compaq is down 17%. I still hold both, but for some reason, can't quite put my finger on it, i like Sun better.

I'm glad i'm all in, i wouldn't know what to buy today.

Steve

eric -
take a look at Message 12205294
if you think SUNW is more profitable than CPQ in the enterprise space.

CPQ is being dragged down by its unprofitable commercial PC business. But since the Enterprise business is a separate P&L, it is easy to compare them with SUN.

BTW I think Sun's management is interesting but spotty. They run the company kind of the way I would, engineers still have a big say and the "dilbert" managers are few and far between. That's one of the reasons I like them but it doesn't always drive the biggest bottom line.

Sun gives ideas a chance even when they don't have a solid business case - for example java - and they have been a huge influence on the development community all out of proportion to their market share.

I kind of feel about Sun as I did about Elway and the broncos. Always liked the team, but never expected them to live up to their potential and them WHAMMO - 2 super bowl victories...

Eric,

Only time will tell whether SUNW has gotten ahead of itself.
Anyone with a high P/E is laden with expectations, which could
come to a crashing halt if they don't deliver.

SUNW, however, has a history of delivering on their promises,
and has very little competition (2 to be precise) in the web-
server market, which is about 5% saturated. I keep asking
the same question: who else is out there to challenge SUNW's
dominance??? I haven't heard any replies yet.

CPQ may be inexpensive, at the moment, but I wouldn't buy it
just because of that. They have been struggling for a reason,
and their fundamentals have been on a downslide for over a
year now. What are they going to do to pull out??? Are their
ideas viable??? I haven't seen much yet.

They have decided to jettison NT on their Alpha's in favor of
Unix, a good first step, to be sure. What's next???
