If you've ever tried to get one fixed, you'll know that the sum of the prices of the parts far exceeds the price on the complete car.

The value of the component parts of Standard Oil and AT&T soared following the break-up of those companies. Stockholder value was enhanced by the break-ups.

Try not to think of MSFT as the sum of the component parts but as the manufacturer of each of those parts. Following a break-up, the maker of each component is now to compete for business from other car manufacturers, free to price their component at what the market will bear, etc. rather than be dictated to by a single manufacturer's (Mercedes) vision of the market. MSFT is full of talented people and I don't doubt their ability to make us money!
