Here is where Lindy explained the genesis of the term:

And here, for good measure, are the comments of two familiar faces on the question of which category a certain thread favorite fell into last year, and what the investing implications of that were:

Uncle Frank: I much appreciate your letting me know that the "shiny pebble" designation is based on a "legend" from Dancelot or Merlin.

(Tekboy has just given us a link to that post #2838 from Dancelot)

Even though I did go back some time ago and read every post on this thread starting with #1, I missed the reference to Isaac Newton's observation cited by LindyBill and his reasoning re this thread.

Quote: We are constantly going through new posts on companies of these types, and trying to sort out the "Shiny Pebbles" from the "Baby Gorillas"

I got 'Shiny Pebbles" from Isaac Newton, who said:

"When I think of what I have learned, I feel like a small boy, walking along a beach picking up shiny pebbles, while a whole ocean of knowledge lies before me." Unquote

I appreciate LindyBill's point - and the need to keep the thread concentrated where the gorillas are and on potential gorillas.

Guess my rant on shiny pebbles came from thinking about LindyBill's latest suggestion - that this thread give more emphasis and serious consideration to Kings now.

This led me to think about where those future kings will come from.

I accept that shiny pebble is not meant to be pejorative. And that separating the wheat from the chaff early on is necessary.

But my problems with the use of the term shiny pebbles are:

1) A pebble can not grow. Yet the companies dismissed as "shiny pebbles" are young small companies which are usually growing rapidly if not explosively.

2) Throwing the term "shiny pebble" at a new poster who is interested in joining this thread is offputting. It may not be meant to be dismissal but it has that effect.

In substance, I agree that a major strength of this thread is its careful adherence to the book's definitions so that posters are using a common language for discussion. This is extremely useful.

And another strength here is concentration on those companies that are either gorillas already or have near term gorilla potential.

And agreed upon kings, such as JDSU, are certainly worth discussing in depth.

But I return to the problem which I see which is how best to handle potential royalty within the context of the book.

This is why I look forward to the discussion of kings and potential kings which I hope will be the next area for the thread to consider.

Best and thanks.
