On the surface there appear to be more basic similarities than differences between SAN and NAS. The former is more complex, has bigger capacity , and operates in a fiber channel "cloud". The latter is simpler with less capacity and operates in a LAN Ethernet "cloud" They can connect to each other. An important thing to remember is that neither represents much over 10% of the market now, which is dominated by the old traditional direct server storage link. There has been much talk here about increasing Ethernet speeds, but in the future won't there be fibre channel speed increases too? I don't really know the answer to that last question, but it seems logical. Still learning myself.
