I would agree that you have hit upon the major differences between socialism and communism, X. Totalitarianism is probably in fact a better word to use just to make clear that there are substantial differences. I get kind of tired of all the rightwingers ranting about socialism and communism in the same breath when they benefit from the gentle socialism of American society, when in reality communism is usually a great evil, and socialism often is not.
