Oracle Announces Support for the Java(TM) 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition
PR Newswire - December 07, 1999 08:17

Support to Benefit ISVs and ASPs Building and Deploying on the Oracle Internet Platform

NEW YORK, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- At the Java Business Conference, Oracle Corp. (Nasdaq: ORCL), the number one choice for e-business, announced that it will license and support Sun Microsystems's Java (TM) 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) across Oracle's entire Internet Platform.

"Oracle is laser focused on delivering the software infrastructure necessary for successful e-business transformation. It's a critical requirement to gaining competitive advantage in today's Internet economy," said Jeremy Burton, vice president of Internet Platform Marketing, Oracle Corporation. "Oracle has worked closely with Sun and others to define the Java 2 platform, and we will continue this effort through our licensing and support of Java 2 Enterprise Edition."

Oracle's support of J2EE will span Oracle JDeveloper with Oracle Business Components for Java, the Oracle XML Developer's Kit, Oracle(R) Application Server, Oracle8i(TM) and Oracle8i Lite and the recently announced Oracle Integration Server. Developers can download copies of the latest versions of Oracle software free-of-charge from the Oracle Technology Network at technet.oracle.com.

ISVs and ASPs to Benefit

Today's announcement is welcome news for the tens of thousands of independent software vendors (ISVs) and application service providers (ASPs) seeking common ground for building and hosting the next generation of Internet-based applications. Software developers who standardize on the Oracle Internet Platform can take advantage of Oracle's productive Java development tools and support for the J2EE standard. ASPs can attract both end-user customers and software developers by delivering a standards-based application hosting environment that runs on any hardware and operating system, delivering the scalability, reliability and performance required for e-business.

"Underscoring the company's commitment to bring simplicity, scalability, and choice to its customers, Oracle will license and support Sun's Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition across its entire Internet Platform," said George Paolini, vice president, Java Community Development, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We are delighted with Oracle's commitment to the Java platform and to the advancement of Java technology."

Oracle Internet Platform Java Support

Oracle's platform supports the Sun BluePrints (TM) for J2EE, including best practices for technologies such as all Enterprise JavaBeans (TM), servlets, JavaServer Pages(TM) and applets.

Oracle's Java programming tool, Oracle JDeveloper, provides a visual environment for building server-side business logic, advanced Java and HTML user interfaces. The latest release, JDeveloper 3.0, delivers integrated tools for working with Oracle Business Components for Java, a Java and XML-enabled application framework that simplifies the way Java applications are built and deployed. With Business Components for Java, developers can build reusable application components that can later be deployed as J2EE Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB), servlets or JavaServer Pages.

Oracle Application Server provides comprehensive support for J2EE standards, including EJB, servlets, and JavaServer Pages. It delivers advanced scalability for Web applications through clustering, load balancing and priority-based scheduling. With support for EJB in both the application server and database, the Oracle Java deployment platform allows easy application partitioning between tiers for optimum performance and scalability.

The Oracle8i database includes Oracle JServer, a server-side Java engine that provides a 100 percent pure Java virtual machine (VM), an Enterprise JavaBeans server, a CORBA 2.0 Object Request Broker, and built-in support for JDBC, SQLJ and XML. The optimized JServer VM, developed by Oracle, leverages the database's advanced memory management architecture to deliver linear scalability from hundreds of concurrent users on small servers to thousands of users on high-end hardware. Oracle8i Release 2 supports the Java 2 SDK Standard Edition version 1.2 and related programming APIs, making it fully compatible with Java 2 Enterprise Edition standards.

Oracle Corporation is the world's leading supplier of software for information management, and the world's second largest software company. With annual revenues of more than $9.1 billion, the company offers its database, application server, tools and application products, along with related consulting, education and support services, in more than 145 countries around the world.

I have both and I'd say CPQ. Less downside...huge potential upside. ORCL is still a great investment, however.
