StarMedia And Dell Announce E-Commerce and Marketing Agreement for Latin America

Agreement Will Allow StarMedia Users to Configure and Purchase Dell Computer Products Online

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1999-- StarMedia Network Inc. (Nasdaq:STRM - news; www.starmedia.com) and Dell Computer Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL - news; www.dell.com) today announced an e-commerce and cooperative marketing agreement that will bring Dell's extensive product and service offerings to StarMedia users throughout Latin America.

StarMedia will promote Dell systems across the StarMedia network by featuring promotional configurations of Dell PCs, each with a link to Dell's online stores at www.dell.com/la and www.dell.com.br. The two companies will also participate in co-marketing efforts and other promotions. As part of the agreement Dell will pay StarMedia Network an unspecified amount over the one-year contract.

This agreement will provide StarMedia users with direct access to Dell's extensive computer offerings through the computer maker's online store. Users are guided in-language, from the initial welcome to confirmation of the sale and delivery status. The Dell Spanish- and Portuguese-language online stores also feature many of the customer options currently available on the U.S. site, including: easy navigation tools, streamlined selection process, shopping cart, price comparison, product configuration, secure payment applications, payment options and customer service support among others.

``This agreement with Dell advances our mission to offer our users the best premium brands from the comfort of their homes,' said Tomas Melian, vice president of e-commerce at StarMedia Network. ``It will enable Latin Americans to configure and purchase top-quality Dell desktops, notebooks, workstations and servers at competitive prices online. Dell's direct formula has proven to be very successful in the United States and in other countries, and we believe Latin American users will also welcome the power of buying direct.'

``StarMedia Network is a leading Internet destination for Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking audiences worldwide, so this agreement helps extend our products and services into the growing Latin American market,' said Daryl Robertson, vice president and general manager of Dell Latin America. ``StarMedia's strong affiliation with Latin America's online consumers and Dell's proven Internet direct business model make this a strong alliance in the sale and distribution of PCs throughout the region.'

Dell was the first PC manufacturer to launch a pan-regional, Spanish-language online store with a configurator solution, enabling users to customize their products before making a purchase. The www.dell.com/la site was launched in May to serve Spanish-speaking customers and now accounts for more than 30 percent of the company's total sales in Latin America. A Portuguese version of the Dell online store (www.dell.com.br) for the Brazilian market was launched at the beginning of November.

According to Audits & Surveys Worldwide's 1999 ``Telecommunications in Latin America' study, there are approximately 15 million Internet users in Latin America. In its 1999 ``Internet in Latin America' report, Nazca Saatchi & Saatchi projects that this number will grow to approximately 34 million in 2000. The region's online advertising market is also expected to grow dramatically, from $51 million in 1999 to over $1.6 billion in 2004, according to a 1999 study by Forrester Research. Additionally, eMarketer's 1999 ``eGlobal Report' projects that e-commerce revenues for Latin America will exceed $84 billion in 2003.
