DownSouth, Sorry for the late reply. I guess this controversy centers around George Gilder's statement that with 10Gbps GE in the LAN, it will be easier to use NAS. Clearly this is a controversial observation.

Apparently he made some remarks 3 years ago about the attractiveness of FC as an I/O technology:

About the same time, I got interested after I heard that they did the special effects on the original Independence Day movie with an Ancor FC switch. Several of us became FC zealots and posted quite a few messages on the "Ancor" and "A Fibre Channel Future" threads on SI. We have been lucky, since the initial FC foray into the LAN was misguided and I think there are only a handful of large FC LANs. For a while we also saw it as a potential way to cluster processors and other methods won out. The current consensus as a way to cluster and manage storage and storage back up has widespread industry support.

FC clearly has a niche in the SAN or as a disk clustering device and in this configuration it is used by NTAP in their enterprise systems.

I don't know about Gorilla's or Kings - I don't follow that strategy. If you look at a typical fibre channel portfolio this year, you would have sustained a considerable amount appreciation. Many of the stocks are momentum plays based on the projected market increases of storage technology over the next several years.

If you look at the chart for Ancor over the past two years you are right about sleepless nights. Some due to angst and some due to pure excitement.

Good luck with NTAP - I am looking for an entry point.
