Ciena up on expected contract, Wall St comments

NEW YORK, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Shares of CIENA Corp. (NasdaqNM:CIEN - news) jumped
nearly 10 percent on Tuesday amid market rumors it won a contract with Qwest Communications
International Inc. (NasdaqNM:QWST - news) and its planned contract with Williams
Communications Group Inc. (NYSE:WCG - news) remained on track, analysts said.

Shares of Ciena gained 5-1/16 to 53-5/8 in heavy trading on Nasdaq.

``Ciena has won a contract at Qwest. That contract is for metro DWDM (dense wave division multiplexing),' said
BancBoston Robertson Stephens analyst Paul Silverstein.

DWDM equipment helps expand the capacity of fiber optic networks.

A Ciena spokesman declined to comment. Qwest did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Ciena last month announced a $40 million contract to provide Williams with optical switiching equipment. Analysts said that
contract appears to be progressing as planned, despite some earlier concerns on Wall Street that the company may not meet
certain testing milestones, analysts said.

``Psychologically that is important. Qwest and Williams are two high-profile, next-generation companies. And with a foot in
the door...Ciena's position could be leveraged to sell additional equipment,' Silverstein said.

Other analysts said Ciena's recent moves to expand its product portfolio should help it tackle the fast-growing market for
optical networking equipment despite competition from larger rivals.
