(BSNS WIRE) Socket Teams with Cambridge Silicon Radio for Bluetooth Cord
Socket Teams with Cambridge Silicon Radio for Bluetooth Cordless Networking on
Windows CE

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

NEWARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1999--

Socket's CompactFlash CF+ Plug-in Cards Will Use
CSR's Single-chip Low-power Radio

Socket Communications Inc.(OTC BB:SCKT and SCKTW)(PSE:SOK)
today disclosed its plans to enter the cordless computing market by
announcing an agreement with Cambridge Silicon Radio (CSR) whereby CSR
will supply Socket with BlueCore(TM), the industry's first chip to
combine all the elements of the Bluetooth short-range wireless
interconnect standard on a single die.
CSR's "Bluetooth system on a chip," coupled with Socket's
proprietary low-power chip technology, will allow Socket to develop
ultra low-power CompactFlash CF+ plug-in cards that will make it
possible to add Bluetooth compatibility to Microsoft's Windows
CE-based Palm-size PCs, Handheld PCs and pen tablets.
Socket's cards will enable users to connect cordlessly to
Bluetooth enabled mobile phones for wireless web browsing, e-mail, or
remote access to corporate networks.
Socket's Bluetooth solution will also allow users to incorporate
their Windows CE-based computers into short-range cordless networks
that could include mobile and desktop PCs, bar code scanners, phone
headsets, printers and other Bluetooth-enabled devices. Socket is
working with CSR to create a version of CSR's Bluetooth system that
will include firmware tailored for Windows CE.
CSR developed the industry's first fully integrated 2.4GHz radio,
baseband and microcontroller solution on one CMOS chip, offering the
advantages of small size, low power consumption and compatibility with
the Bluetooth standard for short-range wireless networking. CSR's
technology will allow Socket to expand the company's Battery
Friendly(TM) family of plug-in cards that already support wireless web
access, bar code scanning, serial communications and Ethernet
connectivity. Socket expects the first Bluetooth-compatible cards to
be available in the second half of 2000. Socket's CF+ solution will
include a full suite of software including a Bluetooth protocol stack
for operation with Windows CE-based computers.
Bluetooth technology uses short-range radio signals to connect a
variety of intelligent devices that can be up to 10 meters (30 feet)
apart, enabling ad hoc cordless networking scenarios such as using a
Palm-size PC to browse the web via a mobile phone stored in a coat
pocket or briefcase. Socket is a member of the Bluetooth Special
Interest Group (SIG), which currently has more than 1200 member
companies. For more information on Bluetooth, visit the Bluetooth
SIG's web site at www.bluetooth.com.
"CSR is the ideal partner for Socket's cordless products," said
Mike Gifford, founder and vice president of business development for
Socket Communications. "CSR's single-chip CMOS solution gives us the
small size and low power consumption necessary to create
Bluetooth-enabled plug-in cards in the CompactFlash form factor for
use with Windows CE-based computers. "We expect Bluetooth to have a
profound impact on the way people use mobile computers, and we believe
CSR's technology will gives us an opportunity to take a leading role
in this emerging market."
"Our agreement with Socket is an important milestone for CSR,"
said Glenn Collinson, co-founder and Marketing Director of Cambridge
Silicon Radio. "Socket's proven expertise in CompactFlash plug-in card
technology and their close working relationship with Microsoft provide
a fast track for our technology to become incorporated into real-world
cordless networking solutions."
"Socket's Bluetooth initiative is great news for all users of
Windows CE-based mobile computers," said Rogers Weed, director of
marketing for the Productivity Appliances Division at Microsoft Corp.
"Socket's Battery Friendly line of plug-in cards have helped validate
Microsoft's support for industry-standard I/O expansion, and the
ability to add cordless personal area networking promises to open up a
broad range of exciting new applications for the Windows CE platform."
Cambridge Silicon Radio was formed in November 1998 as a spin-off
from Cambridge Consultants Limited with US$10M of funding from 3i,
Amadeus Capital Partners and Gilde IT Fund. Although Bluetooth is the
company's principle initial focus, CSR will also develop higher
data-rate products when these are needed and will apply its expertise
to other non-Bluetooth applications. For further information on CSR's
product range visit their web site at www.cambridgesiliconradio.com
