ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. (Reuters) - Motorola Inc. (MOT.N), the world's No. 2 wireless telephone maker, said Tuesday it was awarded six new contracts from Chinese telecommunications companies China Unicom and China Mobile in deals totaling $228 million.

Motorola said its network solutions sector will upgrade and enhance the two companies' global system for mobile communications (GSM) networks, increasing network capacity by 2.35 million subscribers by July 2000.

Motorola said it will expand GSM900 networks for China Unicom in Jiangsu, Guangdong, Fujian, Shandong and Xinjiang provinces under five contracts worth $163 million.

``These expansions will enable China Unicom to provide higher quality levels of voice services for the customers. They will also lay the foundation for new, high-speed data networks of the future,' Tim Chen, general manager of China operations for Motorola, said.

It will also expand the GSM network in the Sichuan province under a $65 million contract with China Mobile.

Motorola has already been supplying and expanding the GSM network for China Unicom since 1994.
