Your post is very insightful. It is the type of decision matrix that one would wish was directly on Novell's senior management plate.

After listening to quarterly conference call after quarterly conference call, I have always found the inability of Novell senior management to explain what the company is doing in simple enough terms for Wall Street to understand to be a major problem with the stock price. This simplifying and explaining of complex technology (sufficient so that there are more Dube savvy analysts following the stock) is well addressed by campaigns by other companies as in the "Intel inside" and the "dot in .com" campaign. The "Intel inside" campaign found the Intel sticker on every box and advertisement and had terrific interest to the consumer. The "dot in .com" campaign made people aware that SUNW was cleaning up in the internet server market.

Novell should really address this issue by hiring some people who can understand the technology enough to explain it to the public. Schmidt has been doing this as Novell's lead spokesman but it should be a much more in depth Novell policy. They did this a little bit with the digitalme announcement in New York but they really need to do this big time. They should not just hire a PR firm to develop a campaign. What they should really do is look for little Schmidts. He is he model for the "explainer", the person who can articulate the technology to the public.
