As in the contest for basic Web browsers, the player war pits Microsoft Corp. against a scrappy upstart that leapt to a commanding early lead. In this case, the market-share leader is RealNetworks Inc.'s RealPlayer, which in November was used by about four times as many Internet surfers as Microsoft's Windows Media Player, according to Nielsen/NetRatings.
