This, coupled with the tradition of conquest given them by Jewish patriarchs beginning with Abraham, made 1948 possible.

Interestingly, and I think unique in history, the Hebrew conquests were confined within carefully and exactly defined geographic boundaries.

You are right, it would have been conceivable to have stoked the imagination in the intervening centuries, but I do not think that in fact occurred, to any great extent. One of the goals of the Zionists was to create a "New Jew", someone who stood strong and tall among nations, instead of being self- effacing in the face of oppression.....
