California still have the dreaded:

Alternative Minimum Tax

I believe that this tax can in some cases be higher than the Federal tax.

California taxes all capital gains as ordinary income which for most people on this forum is works out to 9.2%. Thus if you are a California resident planning on selling a large amount stock it would be a good idea to consider moving out of state before selling your stock. Obviously you have to be free from employment in California to change your state of residence.
