edocs and CheckFree Achieve Electronic Billing and Payment Deployment Milestones

NATICK, Mass., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- edocs, the leading provider of
Internet billing software and solutions today announced that edocs' BillDirect
has e-bill enabled more of CheckFree's (Nasdaq: CKFR) billing customers than
any other Internet billing solution. In addition, the company announced that
the e-bill applications it has deployed in conjunction with CheckFree are able
to manage the electronic delivery and payment of more than 400 million bills
annually. This represents more than 2 percent of the 18 billion total
recurring bills produced annually in the United States.
Since establishing a relationship in June of 1998, edocs and CheckFree
have collaborated on more than 12 complex Electronic Billing and Payment
deployments for some of the world's largest billers. The two companies offer
billers two options to connect to CheckFree next generation Genesis E-Bill
system: an outsourced option for creating and presenting bills online and an
option where billers can deploy a thin consolidator model and link bills to
CheckFree endpoints. edocs and CheckFree together deliver to billers a
complete "out of the box" option to get up and running quickly, with
flexibility regarding managing bill creation and storage.
Analysts, as well as customers, expect that the partnership will continue
to thrive, yielding great benefits for billers.
"CheckFree and edocs represent best of breed players in their respective
categories, and the combination of CheckFree's comprehensive bill payment and
distribution capabilities coupled with edocs complete, scalable, packaged
Internet billing solution makes this a promising solution for high volume
billers," said Paul Hughes, senior analyst at the Yankee Group. "edocs and
CheckFree can achieve a high level of success with their continued commitment
to building a successful partnership in the EBPP category. Billers recognize
the experience that CheckFree and edocs bring to the table when it comes to
enabling a rapid deployment of robust, scalable and feature rich EBPP
solutions."
"Our partnerships with edocs and CheckFree have helped Boston Edison to
better leverage the Internet to make the billing process more cost effective
and convenient for our customers," said David Samuel, Vice President of
Information Services for NSTAR, Boston Edison's parent company. Samuel
added, "We have certainly benefited from edocs' BillDirect platform and
CheckFree's outsourced environment for Internet billing."
"We've been extremely pleased with edocs as a partner, and with BillDirect
as an innovative solution that delivers real value to the billers we service.
That pays off in shortening the time it takes to move from contract signing to
live electronic bills being delivered to customers," said Sean Feeney,
Executive Vice President at CheckFree. "The high quality of support we have
received from the edocs team also has been a strong advantage for both us and
our customers," Feeney added.
"As a result of our collaboration to deploy some of the world's largest
billers in both outsourced and thin consolidator modes, we've been able to
greatly enhance the ease of use, functionality, and robustness of BillDirect,"
said Jim Moran, Executive Vice President at edocs. "Key examples include
BillDirect's integration with CheckFree's Genesis E-Billing and payment
system, a capability we've had in production for nearly one year, and our
complete graphical application development environment, which makes it easy
for billers to use legacy billing information as the foundation for enabling
customer relationship management on the web. We're looking forward to
continuing our collaboration with CheckFree to leverage their market leading
bill distribution and payment services."

<<Random speculation here, but can I assume we now know what the bulk of the $150 million debt placement is for..?>>

I take that back. Upon re-reading the edocs release, I'm coming up with a different guess as to why they would put this out.

Perhaps AMEX, ATT, etc. have mostly been sitting on the sidelines, awaiting the final release of v3.0 (after all, why go through all the hassle of setting up the service to only have to reconfigure it (and re-educate your customer base) only a few months later? Not to sound too overly-enthusiastic (after all, I wouldn't want to jinx the incredible run up we've seen), but the edocs release sounds like a HUGE advertisement to simply get all those procrastinating billers off the fence and signed up with edocs for deployment ASAP...maybe this really HAS been the catalyst to get the implementation and advertising going...

BTW -- I just finished tooling around the edocs site. The demos are pretty cool, and I noticed that the credit card demo's payment function IS co-branded with Checkfree, btw.

Here's the link...

BTW, it's pretty funny that of all edocs' partners, one notable company couldn't even muster up one nice sentence on their behalf. See if you can pick it out:
