Minority Supplier Group Names Delphi Automotive 'Corporation of the Year'

DAYTON, Ohio, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- The Dayton Minority Supplier Development Council has named Delphi Automotive Systems a 1999 ''Corporation of the Year'' for Delphi's efforts to help develop and grow a strong minority- owned supplier base. The award was presented to Delphi by the Council's Selection Committee Chairman Joseph Little.

''Delphi Automotive is an active participant in minority procurement programs throughout the country,'' said Little. ''Their Minority Supplier Development Program includes several initiatives to help minority companies prosper. Under this program, Delphi has entered into major contracts for goods and services with minority-owned businesses.''

For the past four years, Delphi has sponsored the ''Automotive Matchmaker,'' in Dayton to bring purchasing agents from major automotive suppliers together with minority business entrepreneurs specializing in the automotive industry. The event is generally recognized as one of the premier minority enterprise trade shows in the country and draws participants from as far as Arizona and Florida. In 1999, nearly 200 minority vendors exhibited their goods and services for 1,200 representatives from the automotive and related industries.

''Receiving this award means a great deal to Delphi, because we believe that a strong minority supplier community is very important, said Ray C. Campbell, Delphi Vice-President, Purchasing. ''Our long-term success depends on identifying and working with the best suppliers in the world, and it has become increasingly obvious over the years that many of those companies are minority-owned. We want to assure they have the opportunity to be part of the Delphi supplier team.''

The Dayton Minority Supplier Development Council offers an opportunity for Dayton area minority business owners and industry leaders to network and discuss issues of common interest. The Council is an affiliate program of the South Central Ohio Minority Business Council and the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce.

Delphi Invests in Anderson, Ind., Facility

FLINT, Mich., Dec. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Delphi Automotive Systems (NYSE: DPH - news) is investing nearly $2.7 million in its Anderson, Ind., manufacturing facility, according to Donald L. Runkle, president of Delphi Energy & Engine Management Systems.

$1.7 million is for the installation of two lean assembly cells in Anderson's ignition plant. The assembly cells will replace two existing production lines and will be used for the manufacture of a direct-ignition system. Delphi will also invest $946,000 to restore approximately 280,000 square feet of the ignition plant roof. Both investments will be made this year.

The direct-ignition system is an electronic engine-sensing and spark- control system that determines spark plug timing. The system connects to the engine electronically, not mechanically; therefore, it has no moving parts and does not require timing adjustment. A typical package includes one two-tower inductive coil for each cylinder pair and ignition module, and a crankshaft and/or camshaft position sensor. The direct-ignition system is compatible with today's sophisticated engine management systems as well as simpler systems.

''We're excited about the new assembly cells we will be implementing in our plant here in Anderson,'' said William P. Elia, ignition plant manager. ''This investment in our direct-ignition system assembly process will help us improve our competitiveness.''

Capital expenditures announced during the first six months of 1999 for Delphi's Dynamics & Propulsion Sector worldwide were in excess of $165 million. During 1998, Delphi invested approximately $900 million in capital expenditures for all of Delphi's locations in the United States.
