Lesley Stahl was the reporter interviewing Madeleine Albright. I don't have a link to the interview but this segment of the interview has been often referenced. Do a search on, Iraq children deaths and you will find plenty.

<<From another angle - do you think Clinton and other western leaders would rather have Saddam to deal with v. a religious fundamentalist?>> I am confused by that question. Religion for believers is fundamental to their principles of living. I think Clinton would be a fish out of water trying to negotiate a deal with anyone who worships truth.

<<Do you think 500,000 committed adults in Iraq could act in such a way as to spare the 500,000 children?>> I am sure they are doing everything they can to save as many as possible.

In a typical year Iraq is allowed to sell about four billion dollars worth of oil. Half of that amount is exhorted for war reparations, UN operations in the region, aid to the Kurdish population and repairing the oil pipeline. The remaining amount is spent by Saddam on his regime but if divided among 18 million Iraqis comes to a paltry 25 cents per person.
