FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (CBS.MW) -- International Data Corp. said Tuesday it
foresees unit volume in the worldwide PC market increasing 17 percent
year-over-year, revised slightly from the research firm's previous prediction of
20 percent growth.

IDC also projects shipments to grow 15.8 percent
from the third quarter 1999.

"The availability of graphic chips, chipsets, and
memory has tightened due to the [Sept. 21 Taiwan
earthquake], which IDC believes has put some
constraint on PC supply," said John Brown, research
director of IDC's worldwide quarterly PC tracker. "But
a strong, year-on-year global Q4 consumer PC growth
rate of 25.7 percent will keep global PC demand
high."

IDC said Dell, Gateway,
Hewlett-Packard, and Apple
appear to have the "right stuff"
for growth this quarter.

Apple Computer (AAPL:
news, msgs) was flat at 116,
while Dell (DELL: news,
msgs) advanced 11/16 to 45
7/16.

Gateway (GTW: news, msgs)
dropped 3 9/16 to 67 9/16 and
H-P (HWP: news, msgs)
gained 1 95/256 to 106 1/16.

Compaq (CPQ: news, msgs)
was lower at 26 7/16.

IBM's (IBM: news, msgs) gain
of 1.4 percent was helped by
a price target increase from
SoundView Technology Group. Analyst Gary Helmig upped his outlook to
$140 from $110 and reiterated his "buy" rating on the tech giant.

Japan set the biggest geographic rebound this year, IDC said.

Additionally, in the United States, IDC predicts fourth-quarter growth to reach
12.9 percent as a result of a strong year-earlier quarter, PC supply issues
related to the Taiwan quake and some reduction in corporate demand due to
Y2K issues. For 1999, the United States is expected to greet PC growth of
23.5 percent vs. 1998.
