Mucho - By "limited applicability" for "claim stakes", are you saying that Qualcomm's patents do not cover WCDMA? Or is coverage somehow otherwise afforded?

I did not in any way mean to imply that Qualcomm does not have other, broader, non claim stake, patents. They do (e.g. the oft mentioned power control patent). I was just commenting further on how patents are used and that there can be subtle but important differences in how patents are targeted. Qualcomm, in addition to being technologically innovative, also makes extremely(!) good use of the patent system in every way that is above board.

PS Maurice - Although I agree Viterbi, Dr. J, ... are very very good, I wouldn't necessarily put them above Jenner or Flemming. Although many things that we take for granted now appear obvious, several hundred years ago they would have been considered physically impossible. It takes a certain kind of person to break out of the box and I wouldn't gainsay either Flemming or Jenner without knowing the prevailing beliefs of the times.
