Intel strategic investments rise in 1999

BOMBAY, Dec 7 (Reuters) - Global strategic investments of
Intel Corp., the world's biggest computer chip maker, has risen
to over $1 billion in 1999 from over $800 million last year, a
company official said on Tuesday.
"Last year we invested over $800 million worldwide. This
year we have passed the $1.0 billion mark," Leslie Vadasz,
Intel's senior vice president and director, Corporate Business
Development, told a news conference.
He said Intel's investment portfolio comprised over 300
companies in over 15 countries, which were valued at nearly
$5.O billion.
In 1999, over a third of the investments in dollars and
numbers terms is outside the United States compared to less
than five percent in 1998, he said.
The Intel official said the Asia-Pacific region has already
seen more than 20 investments in 1999 compared to six last
year.
In India, where Intel has made strategic investments in
seven firms so far, Vadasz said it was too early to judge their
performance but some like Internet content provider Rediff on
the Net were functioning well.
"It is early to tell but I'm pretty positive and I think
that we will see some major successes. I think that Rediff is
living up to our early expectations being a very important
portal," he said.
