Jimbo- This contract should make my IBM look good tomorrow,, CANBERRA, Dec 8 Asia Pulse - IBM Global Services Australia has won a $A350 million ($US228.62 million) contract to provide information technology services to the Department of Health and Aged Care and the Health Insurance Commission, Finance Minister John Fahey announced Tuesday. IBM GSA will provide mainframe, server, desktop, network and related infrastructure services to the agencies for five years following contracts signed Monday, Mr Fahey told parliament. The new arrangements would improve service levels and save taxpayers $A30,000 ($US19,596.0) a day for every day of the five year contracts, Mr Fahey said. "The winning bidder not only had to deliver improved services and to provide an immediate windfall for taxpayers but also had to commit to deliver significant long term benefits for the Australian IT and T industry," Mr Fahey said. Small and medium businesses will win around $A70 million ($US45.72 million) of new business as a result of the tender, he said. This includes a strategic alliance between IBM GSA and Melbourne firm Hallis to provide call centres to the health agencies. Exceed of Canberra, TSG of Canberra and Mail Management of Sydney will also get work and ASI Solutions will provide equipment and support. About 280 new jobs will be created, including 100 in Brisbane and 50 in regional areas, Mr Fahey said. "These results once again validate the government's strategy to outsource the Commonwealth's IT infrastructure needs," Mr Fahey said. "They demonstrate once again the government is determined to use its purchasing power to promote the growth of the Australian IT and T industry," Mr Fahey said. ASIA PULSE
