Ancor presentation- Focused on the technolgy right from the Get Go -except that Ken's daughter had twins this morning and he started out his presentation with the big announcement which everyone thought was INTEL and then he comments instead about grandpahood which got everybody relaxed. Smaller crowd the Brocade but still well attended - Veritas was the biggest draw which was the same time as ANCR.
Talked about things we all know about switches but unveiled in slide form the new 64 port switch which they share with Inrange -It is somewhat of a joint venture but they will be selling the product seperately(that one i'm not sure about and the question never got answered) but it is my understanding that it is the same product. The non-blocking feature was stressed today and they have had alot of inquiries already about it- Ancor feels it is where the market is going with UNIX enterprise systems- Brocade stressed that they believe the market is the entry level SANs that gets built out over time and it is there focus.
SUN likes the 8 hot swappable ports as they want all their solutions to be modular as possible. Ancor touting it as lowest cost and highest performance switch that exists -2 Gig version coming next year.
S-BUS -no problem and did Steve S. did an excellent job describing warrents to analysts with slide presentation.
Everybody at the conference agreed that HUBs are dead -Ancor and Brocade agree that high end Switched Fabric is the biggest place to be in terms of growth as did DATAQUEST presentation- Ancor though goes a step further -They believe the largest growth will be the storage Director (64 port switch I took that to mean) according to their charts.
Ancor believes when they really ramp that operating margins will be around 20% with R&D at about 12%.
Intutition tell me that Revs will ramp on SUN Quarter 1 and then ramp big time in Q2- Just Ken's body language and tone made me feel they are looking big time to Q2 -Sun Revs in Q4 definately -How much? Who knows-
Lack of standards between heterogenuos environments still the biggest problem for FC and the lack of office systems software making it difficult for FC to show its stuff as the ultimate filing system -However Ken says given that customers still want FC, want it now, is that once it performs, the speed and functionality of the product sell the SANs without it yet being the ultimate filing system-
They believe that the Asics is the best and the 64 port switch is the proof and the pudding -They also believe that they and Brocade are the OEM choices when it comes down to it(Gadzoox hinted they have a tier 1 today with the Cappelix switch).
The rest of Ancor presentation was things you've all heard before so I won't bore you but it was an A1 presentation- Ken does well in front of an audience- Very real and very funny -Took me totally by surprise
- Data quest also thinks that Brocades spot as well as Ancors spot in the market is where the highest growth and margins is without mentioning their names - He Highest growth rates this year to 2002 with leveling off after that -Of course we will have infiniband by them for the next push<G> Dataquest was the next presenter at lunch and the numbers were huge- He discuseed everything from MYlex to Hitachi to EMC.
