BUG REPORT - Win98SE - 3COM modem used in USB mode

3Com has discovered a situation in which the 3Com US Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem Pro fails to respond properly when installed as a USB device on a Microsoft Windows 98 SE system. The modem may be accessed normally after using the "More Info" command on the Com Port assigned to the modem.

3Com engineers are currently investigating this issue. We hope to have a resolution in the near future. At this time the only options available are to return to the previous version of Windows or to install the modem as a serial device using a serial port. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Please check our website for further information as it becomes available. consumer.3com.com

If you are unfamiliar with the "more info" diagnostic command, please use the following instructions.

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

2. Double-click Modems, and then verify that your modem is listed on the General tab.

3. Click Diagnostics, click the COM port to which your modem is attached, and then click More Info.

4. Your modem should now be accessible to other Windows applications for the remainder of your Windows session.

Note: This will need to be done each time windows has been restarted.

I'll bet you can't guess who installed Win 98SE this past weekend. :-(

Am glad you finally got "results" from Dell. Too bad you had to go to so much trouble. Not too many of their customers would have hung in there like a bulldog. You get this month's Churchill award! Keep the name of the person with the "right" answer on file in case one of us runs into a similar problem.
