I read the fine print on the AMEX trading deal and its not really free commissions.

The free commissions get tacked onto your income and the IRS is informed.

It would be totally free if the commissions were free under the table with no taxation by Uncle Sam, Or as an alternative if AMEX were to give you extra cash with every trade. The purpose of that cash would be to used to pay that extra bit of taxes you would owe to Uncle Sam at the end of the year.

I used to work for McDonnell Douglas and they gave a true bonus. When they told you you were to receive a bonus say of $1000, you actually took home $1000. In truth the bonus was for a bit more, but after taxes it was $1000.
