Swedish cellular giant adopts Explorer for new mobile phones; Psion tumbles
December 08, 1999: 8:17 a.m. ET

LONDON (CNNfn) - Microsoft and Swedish mobile phone giant Ericsson Tuesday launched a strategic joint venture to boost their chances of creating the industry?s standard platform for the next generation of mobile phones.
Ericsson has agreed to adopt Microsoft?s mobile Explorer platform for its next generation of cellular phones, which will give users access to Internet and data services, including information and email.
Microsoft has been seeking to lure major cellular operators to use Windows for the new mobile phones rather than the Symbian platform developed by Britain?s Psion.
Ericsson, the world?s third-largest mobile manufacturer, holds a stake in Symbian together with larger rivals Nokia and Motorola.
Ericsson said it?s committed to also developing the Symbian platform.
But Psion shares tumbled 40 percent in London following the Ericsson announcement while Ericsson shares traded up 14 percent in Stockholm.
