This seems to be more like playing the horses -- people just want to bet on the winners.

Interesting analogy. Certainly, one wouldn't try to make money at the track betting on a horse that he felt was sure to lose.

I conjure up the image of investors picking up dimes lying on the railroad tracks with an inbound freight in view. The market seems to depend more on the influx of 401-K funds than anything else. The NASDAQ is the worst bubble I've ever seen.
