CSCO CEO comments on COMS. nwfusion.com

Does Cisco plan to come out with a competitor to
the 3Com Palm?

Actually, I like the 3Com Palm. So, no, I'd be
surprised if we go after that market. In fact, you
actually might find us working with 3Com if they spin
this out as an independent organization with the Palm
group. Because we want anything that promotes the
network.
So the more load that gets put on the
network, the better, and I don't mind helping my
competitors when they help do that in a way that I
benefit from.

3Com to spin off palm business in February

BEIJING, Dec 8 (Reuters) - U.S.-based networking equipment company 3Com Corp. will spin off its
palm computing business in February next year, a senior official said on Wednesday.

''The IPO (initial public offering), the spinoff, is set to be in February and we just announced the
recent appointment of its CEO,' Matthew Kapp, president of 3Com Asia Pacific, told reporters.

''This will allow 3Com to be a very focused networking company again,' Kapp said.

3Com Corp. announced on Thursday that former Sony Corp. electronics executive Carl Yankowski
would head its Palm Computing division.

Yankowski will take up his new post as chief executive and a director of 3Com's Palm Computing
Inc. on Dec. 13.

''The spinoff enables the palm business to have a pure play position in the marketplace and it
allows investors to invest in a company which is specifically in one sector,' Kapp said.

3Com Corp. reported revenues of $1.39 billion for its first quarter ended August 27, compared with
last year's $1.41 billion.

Revenue for its handheld computing business surged 50 percent to $174.2 million for the quarter.
