TOKYO, Dec. 10 (Kyodo) -- Sony Corp. plans to apply for a license to offer Internet-based online banking services, Sony officials said Thursday.

Sony plans to let customers pay for goods and services through the projected Web bank, while also providing consumer loan services through the Web, the officials said.

The Web bank, if authorized by the Financial Supervisory Agency, would be the fourth financial institution set up by the Sony group, following its three existing financial affiliates engaged in life insurance, casualty insurance, and credit services.

Sony has recruited Shigeru Ishii, a former official at the defunct Yamaichi Securities Co., to head the new project, they said.
