Satyam Computer scouting for more acquisitions

(Thursday, December 9, 1999)

James Mathew and Bipin Chandran in New Delhi

Close on the heels of Satyam Infoway's acquisition of Indiaworld.com portal, the Hyderabad-based Satyam Computer Services, the group flagship, is in negotiations with some international computer ventures for possible acquisitions or strategic tie-ups.

Satyam is also in talks with some of the domestic computer start-ups for either an equity partnership or technological partnership or both. B Ramalinga Raju, chairman, Satyam Computer Services, however said, "nothing has been finalised yet".

"We are considering various cases and there are certain interesting companies we are in talks with. But we have yet to finalise the course of action," he said.

"We are looking at companies which are key to our business growth," he said.

Raju, however, refused to divulge the names of the international companies.

"Globalisation is a key part of our growth agenda. We intend to start more development centers abroad. This could be through inorganic growth," said Raju. The company currently has 30 development centers abroad.......

Mohan:

Agree with you on SIFY.

I wanted your, and others, opinion on what you think will happen as we get closer to the end of the year. Do you think that the Y2K fear will heighten at least to the extent that it creates an uncertainty in the marketplace and thereby drive prices down?

Also I know a manager in toyota who has been in charge of the Y2k for 2 years and he was of the opinion that Y2K will be a major problem. His additional concerns were:
. the oil prodcution and refining
. Just in time mfg. may halt production lines if even 1 single vendor has YK problems.
. Any problem may have a snowball effect on the rest of the economy.
. Other country' problems may also have an effect on our economy.

Analysis and Opinions for and against welcome.

If you're in on ANDN through the IPO. You must be doing "dandya raas" right about now!
I hope it's a good play tomorrow. I'll try to get in on the action.
