But Noguera believes Harvard has the freedom and the will to improve diversity, unlike Berkeley. The California school is bound by the UC Board of Regents 1995 vote to stop considering race in hiring and admissions and Californians' 1996 endorsement of Proposition 209, which did much the same thing in all branches of public life.

I don't know... I don't think so. I don't understand how tenure works though, and academia is a lifetime employment kind of thing, so I was thinking diversity would take longer there vs. industry.

If you have to work for 10 years to get tenure, and those that are tenured never leave, then it would seem like you are looking at a past reflection of diversity from maybe 20 years ago or so, if you look at who is tenured today.

Engineering and business is a little better because I know those people come and go... they work in industry and return etc. so there is more turnover.

Do you have issues with the way Mit or Harvard select their incoming student body? You appear to be questioning my position on quotas... the ivy league is worse than quotas, (they look at family members who attended, etc.)... how do you feel about that? I think its fair to say that Brooke Shields would not have been ivy league material on academic merit alone.
