Things were very different then. The Protectionists had the Government. Today they have Pat Buchanan <yuck> and the Unions.
Smith Hawley Act, thought by modern economists to be the the main impetus for the Depression, has been abandoned. Prior to the Crash, interest rates had been raised by a huge amount per today's standards. There was mega inflation, today virtually none.
