Going short is not a good way to try to profit. You're assuming either that the company is going in reverse (hard to know that if you don't work there), or that we're in a bear market (not as easy a prediction as you think), or that you know exactly when the crowd is going to realize the stock is overpriced compared with equivalent companies (and how do you do that with a company like SUNW that's basically unique?).

I tried making money in 1987 going short. Yes, I was right, there was a crash, but trying to short stocks from April through August as the market rose another 20% nearly gave me a heart attack.

Very rare events are very hard to time. I can't recommend ever going short on anything, except as a hedge on compensating long positions. Humanity and technology advance. So, the value of the companies that produce the technology rises over time.
